Utter Indulgence at Newport's Wine & Food Festival 2013

Brett Portier, owner of Smokehouse NY, and Peggy Portier

2013's Wine & Food Festival, hosted by the  Preservation
of Newport County, had more attendees than ever before -- and they
truly appeared to be enjoying themselves! Of course, it's difficult to
be unhappy when you're in foodie heaven, sampling the finest wines and
local restaurant and caterer offerings inside the stately rooms or on
the expansive lawns of Newport's famous Gilded Age mansions.

Friday night's sold out Wine & Rosecliff event was an upscale soiree for
industry elite and fine wine connoisseurs, with over 45 wines
available to taste, each retailing for $65 a bottle or higher. It was
the perfect night for it, not too chilly and with a huge full moon
reflected in the ocean water. Many guests chose to congregate outside,
mingling and enjoying "Cocktail Guru"  Jonathan Pogash demonstrations of using a saber to open a champagne bottle.

The various vintners were joined by purveyors of other beverages such as sangria, hard cider, rum daiquiris, and creative mixed cocktails. Russell Morin catered, and we loved the butternut squash ravioli and the Newport seafood "pot pie."  Of course the literal icing on the cake were the mini "towers" of dipped cake pops, custards, tartlets, mousses, and other sweet delicacies provided by the Guittard Chocolate Company.

Wine tasting

The grand tastings on Saturday and Sunday, held under a massive tent
at Marble House, attracted huge crowds; the festival seems to be
really hitting its heyday! Claudine Pepin hosted, and cooking
demonstrations were given at the Jenn-Air culinary stage by chefs
including the Cooking Channel's Ben Sargent, Johnny Iuzzini of Sugar
Fueled, Inc., Michel Richard of Washington, DC, "Iron Chef" Alex Guarnaschelli of NYC, and local chefs from Muse at Vanderbilt Grace, Tallulah, Persimmon, and Castle Hill Inn. The authors of several cookbooks and bartender's guides were available to sign books at the Newport
Mansions Store table.

Marble House welcome

The silent auction table was also popular, but most attendees spent
their time sampling the dizzying array of food and beverage options
available, some of which were very exclusive and typically only
carried in restaurants, like Morgan Winery. Ken Forrester, owner of
the largest winery in South Africa, Ken Forrester Vineyard, manned his
station all alone, jovially greeting samplers who may have had no idea
that they were chatting with the man in charge! But that is one of our
favorite aspects of the Wine & Food Festival: its friendly, accessible, cheerful spirit.

 Downtown Party Inaugurated

A new Saturday  evening event, hosted by The Preservation Society of Newport County  and Alex and Ani, was held at Newport's 41 North restaurant, where the mood was "party down", and the photo booth stylists had guests posing, dressing up and vamping for wonderful shots. DJ Josh Wechsler from Luke Renshaw Entertainment, spun terrific dance music, and there was wine (and beer), of course.

In addition to the larger events, the festival lineup included several
different smaller seminars and fun educational classes such as
"Whiskey Camp" and "Fresh, Aged & Textured - Italian Cheese
UNCENSORED!" Overall, the Wine & Food Festival weekend was the perfect chance for food and beverage lovers of all tastes and experience to
expand their palettes, find some new favorites, and spend time with
friends old and new.
