The “Why” of the Newport YMCA 2017

At its lively annual meeting, held at the bucolic Newport Vineyards, the YMCA saluted its own, and Director Mike Miller cited its purposes and accomplishments by thanking instructors, volunteers, staff members and committee heads — with awards and handsome plaques.

It was an uplifting and enlightening presentation, enumerating the expansion of programs into the community, and the partnerships being forged with other Newport area organizations. Joe Dias, Director of Fort Adams, accepted the Social Responsibility award on behalf of  the Fort Adams Trust for the programs developed by the Y and held at Fort Adams.

Randy Doiron,
Head coach for the YMCA Swim Team,  which builds bodies and spirits of young people, was presented with the Youth Development Award.  The Zumba® team from Common Fence Point received anthe Healthy Living awardJohn and Sheryl Callaghan were given a special award for starting the Wine Festival evening, the annual fundraiser which is the Y’s largest, netting $160,000 to date.  Sheryl was honored as the outgoing President of the Board, and presented with flowers. Volunteer of the Year award was presented to Sharon Discuillo, and  Lee Merrill was installed as new President of the Board speaking of the future.
