The Vigor of Picasso, the Ebullience of Zorba at Anthony Quinn "Duende" Opening

Kathy Quinn greets event guests

The late Anthony Quinn was a prolific and dynamic artist as well as an Oscar-winning actor. His canvases, self portraits, and kinetic sculptural works were on display at the preview party on opening night at the Narrows Center for the Arts, Fall River. Wife Kathy Quinn and son Ryan Quinn were on hand for the VIP event, and the works themselves were a revelation: extraordinarily dynamic and powerful.

Duende: The Art of Anthony Quinn celebrated the artist's endless pursuit of creative truth, Duende referring to those magical, haunting moments of inspiration—that led him to use his entire body, mind, and spirit to make beautiful objects and deliver award-winning performances. Duende is a term frequently used in the Spanish arts that poet and playwright Frederico García Lorca refers to as, “a momentary burst of inspiration, the blush of all that is alive, all that the performer is creating in a certain moment.”

Anthony Quinn frequently relied on his internal flame, or duende, while he worked vigorously on his creations.

The exhibition showcases a wide variety of Mr. Quinn’s artwork, including small sketches, drawings, paintings, and sculptures, as well as photographs of the artist at work and artifacts from his studio, including his work benches, tools, library resources, sketchbooks, and….his Oscars, in a case! There was even a video running of the late actor at work in his studio.

Art critic Donald Kuspit once wrote, "examining Quinn's many expressions of creativity together—his art and acting—we can see that he was a creative genius..."  The opening night  guests agreed.

The collection was carefully curated by Michele L’Heureux to display a wide selection of the many types of media Anthony Quinn worked in. She was on hand to discuss the exhibition with guests.

A crowd sipped wine as a guitar duo sang in the spacous Narrows Center. Newport Seen caught up with the charming Kathy Quinn, event designer Richard Carbotti, his wife Patricia, and daughter-in-law Margarita Salek, in from Newport.

The exhibition was made possible by The Anthony Quinn Foundation, which administers The Anthony Quinn Foundation Scholarship Program, whose aim is perpetuate the legendary actor/artist’s vision for an art-conscious society. Duende will run through December 29.
