St. Michael's School Celebrates Its 75th Year

Greeting guests at the door of the Newport Art Museum

It was definitely Mom and Dad's night out, as St. Michael's Country Day School celebrated its 75th anniversary with a gala evening of wine, song and dance at the Newport Art Museum. The event, styled by Richard Carbotti of Perfect Surroundings, along with exquisite food by Russell Morin Fine Catering, and photography by Jay Willis made the event a scholastic smash.

Memorabilia from the school's past, along with works from a number of talented alumni artists, were on display alongside the museum's collection and exhibits. Art and smart combined!

A champagne greeting

Many St. Michael's alumni returned to Newport to toast the school's milestone anniversary and catch up with classmates and faculty. Congressman David N. Cicilline attended and was caught up in the exuberant fun. Former students, interested politicians, an hilarious former teacher, the evening's honoree, and friends of the Newport Institution joined a disco-like atmosphere of strobe lights and terrific dance music first from a D.J perched high above the crowded floor, then to the featured live entertainment from the band "Project DCQ".

Honorary Gala Chair, Mrs. Hope H. (Happy) van Beuren was recognized for the many contributions she has made to better the school. She gave kind and thoughtful remarks about the institution, which was attended by her daughter Andrea.

Headmaster Whitney Slade welcomed guests, and teacher Bob Tavares  gave an hilarious account of being hired when the school was housed in …a house, and his quarters were in the very same house, a far cry from the sprawling seven acre Newport campus today. Mr. Tavares now serves as head of the Middle School at St. Michael's.

Newport Seen rubbed shoulders (literally) with Julia and Curt Richardson, 1944 graduate "Fun" Jenkins, Committee members Bethany di Napoli and Cory Plumb, Hilary and Lauren Magruder, Will Dewey, and Dan and Kerry Dwyer.  Trustee Emeritus Jeff Gordon lauded the teachers and headmaster Slade.

The students themselves were left at home for the evening, no doubt finishing their homework.
