Raising the R.O.O.F. for the Newport Historical Society

Tony Venetucci, Michael Barnum

The stately Colony House, a landmark historic building in Newport, was the setting for a holiday party that literally rang the rafters, and figuratively raised the roof.

A festive table setting

The new group R.O.O.F. , which will hold events benefitting various other charities in Newport as well, is an abbreviation for Royal Order of Fun, and fun was had by all.

Over 100 guests, founding members of the group, wined, dined, danced, some even becoming performers, in of the season’s most jolly events.  Who knew that Peter Jenkins played a mean guitar, and Sharon Cameron Lawn had a fantastic voice (certain insiders, we think.) Completing the ensemble were Cheryl St. George and Bill St. George.

Paul McGreevy, Ken Snyder and Peter Portney

Hosted (and created) by Newport’s Stacie Mills, a doyenne of the party scene. the R.O.O.F event began with cocktails and a D.J. in an elegantly decorated first floor room, tables beautifully set.   Before dinner was served, a few of the guests, in garb of the season, greeted each other, and appreciated the beautifully decorated candle lit tables.

Repairing to the upstairs court room, the one filmed in the movie Amistad) for a performance by The Rooftops, a jazzy ensemble comprising Sharon Cameron Lawn, Peter Jenkins, Stacie Mills, Cheryl St. George amd Bill St. George.  Desiree Harris added her famous dancing pose.  Board members Paul McGreevy and Jessica Hagen thanked Tom Eberhardt, and Stasia Anthony.

Says founder Stacie Mills, "the Idea of The Royal Order of Fun came about several years ago while I was working on a special.  I asked a friend with help on the guest list, and she pulled out her social directory with all the "fun" people starred. The idea to gather fun people for fun parties that would benefit a worthy cause became part of the  process."  R. O.O.F was born.

After applause, it was back down the stairs to a more subdued dinner, which was delicious, and then enthusiastic dancing the night away,
