Potter League “Have a Heart” Cocktail Party & Silent Auction Is a Valentine to its Animals
It was entirely appropriate that the Potter League for Animals should host its 37th annual “Have a Heart” benefit cocktail party and silent auction just before Valentine’s Day, given how easy it can be to fall in love with the sheltered animals that the organization rescues and helps to find homes. A few pooches even made cameo appearances at the event, escorted by their doting trainers and sporting their finest doggy couture. Shades of the Westminster Kennel Club Show!

Fortunately for these wonderful animals, over 500 people had enough “heart” to attend the event and support the organization by purchasing gift bags, raffle tickets, and bidding on a staggering number of donated auction items – over 340 in total! Following a VIP preview party, guests milled about the Hotel Viking’s ballroom, placing their bids on items in categories ranging from “Classy Clothing” to “Sports and Recreation”; from “Bling Bling”, (aka jewelry) to “Treasures for the Animal Lover.” Contradicting the silent component of ‘silent auction,’ the ever-comical Emlen Drayton served as emcee, floating from item to item and contributing a running commentary on the objects that particulary caught his eye. President of the Rhode Island Senate, Teresa Paiva-Weed, attended to give her support, as did Rhode Island Representative Amy Rice.

Also in attendance were Byron Davies of the Potter League, Lisa and Elizabeth Stubbs, Potter League President Christie Smith and Board Member Sheila Reilly, attorney Turner Scott, Geremie Callaghan, Melissa Rapoza, and Denise DiGangi.
Guests were treated to hors d’oeuvres by Stasia Anthony at the pre-party, and Jason McCarthy, along with the Hotel Viking, catered at the main event. When NewportSeen departed the event, the 50/50 raffle had already made it up to almost $4,000. Sid Goehring ultimately split the 50/50 pot, which ended up at $4550! What a grand takeaway for the lucky raffle winner, and an even better way to help make a difference for animals in need!
