Newport Hospital Salutes Health at Summer Soirée

It was a perfect Newport evening. The grounds next to the Eisenhower House were bustling with the guests attending Newport Hospital’s Salute to Health, the hospital’s annual summer soiree. 400 supporters attended the party, dressed in their summer best, raising $719,140 to benefit hospital programs with the most pressing funding needs. As the cornerstone of the evening, $385,850 was raised to support the expansion of Newport Hospital’s Behavioral Health Services Program.

In addition to the incredible fundraising milestones met on that warm summer evening, the event honored Ginny and Jim Purviance, two of the hospital’s long-time supporters. In a release about the event, Jim is described as “a mentor, leader, and steadfast financier” of the Newport Hospital. Jim has served on the Newport Hospital Quality Committee for 10 years, and as a member of the Newport Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees for 20 years. Ginny has also volunteered on a number of hospital committees and chaired the 2014 summer soiree.

The focus of the 2017 event was in funding the launch of Newport Hospital’s partial hospitalization program for patients struggling with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders.

“Everyone has had their life impacted by mental illness and addiction in some way. It touches all of us—every family and every friendship—and this is a program that will create positive change in our community,” said Ginny.

The evening began with a sparkling cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception by Russell Morin Catering & Events — including a mini-lobster roll station and taco truck — and featuring a raw bar, furnished in a decorative dinghy, by Open Oyster. Guests enjoyed live music by the Michael Walsh Group. Guests then filed under the tent, decorated with blue and white striped linens and summery centerpieces from Secret Garden in Jamestown for dinner and bidding.

Eager to support the cause, guests raised their bid numbers high and often, including a number of guests who raised their cards at the $25,000 and $10,000 levels to directly support the new endeavors.

Since 2008, Newport Hospital’s summer benefit has raised nearly $3.4 million for critical programs and related equipment, including the emergency department, interventional radiology, the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center, the Intensive Care Unit, diagnostic imaging, Women’s Health services and programs, and more.
