Newport Art Museum Announces New Initiatives, Honors the Late Jean DiBona

Mr. & Mrs. Vin Di Bona

It was a meeting both nostalgic and forward-looking, as the Newport Art Museum, celebrating and planning after a $4.7 million anonymous donation, acquainted members and friends about the expansion of several initiatives, and celebrated the life of the late Jean DiBona.

Television producer and creator of "America’s Funniest Home Videos" and other programming, Vin DiBona, was on hand with a loving remembrance of his late mother through the years. Two portraits of her, one at 15 and one at 95, graced the Igenfritz Gallery, along with a collection of her hats, a fashion trademark.

NAM Executive Director Norah Diedrich welcomed Steven Richter to the Board and said farewell to four retiring members.  She called NAM the “miracle on Bellevue Avenue”, and vowed to “keep the momentum going,”  on  the successful initiatives being expanded: the Arts Campus, the three building comprising the Art Museum; expanded partnerships; the capacity to  grow the Board; and sustainability. The always anticipitated annual Artists’ Ball , a staple of the summer season, this year honors Dodie Kazanjian and Calvin Tomkins

John Grosvenor introduced the Peabody Award-winning producer Mr. DiBona, who gave a history in slides of his other and her support of his career, stating “behind every great man is a great mother”, with a slide of his star on the Hollywood Hall of Fame.  Some of her philosophies:  “never take no for an answer”, “reach for the stars”, and “always bring two hankies”.  She passed just short of her 99th birthday.

The audience and members heard the treasurer's report, and adjourned to cocktails and conversation.
