Newport Antiques Show 2011 A Top Echelon Event

Alison & Bill Vareika, Presenting Sponsor of the

Newport Antiques Show

Shades of Sotheby's, echoes of Christie's, and a knowing glance at the prestigious New York Armory Antiques Show! In its 5th year, under the direction of Anne Hamilton, the Newport Antiques Show has shown itself to be in the top echelon of regional Antiques events.

Over forty of the industry’s finest dealers showcased the best the antiques world has to offer to over 2,500 visitors at the Stephen P. Cabot and Archer Harman Ice Center at St. George’s School in Middletown, RI.
The Show was managed by Diana Bittel , and the presenting sponsor was (and has been) the ubiquitous William Vareika Fine Arts of Newport. Anne Hamilton, of Newport and Philadelphia, once again served as the 2011 event Chair. Honorary chairs for the Show were Mrs. Samuel M.V. Hamilton, Mrs. Robert H. Charles and Mrs. John R. Donnell.

The ice rink became once again an elegant agora, and the Connoisseur's Preview Party attracted hundreds of guests, with excellent risotto, hors d'oeuvres, champagne and wines. The large Philadelphia contingent (Mrs. Hamilton and her husband Matt are winter residents) included many young Hamiltons Miles, Gray and their brother, and Samuel Chew, whose family donated the American Cliveden estate to the National Trust. Yes, there is a Cliveden  in England, as well.

With a decidedly New England bias, the dealers who participated appealed to the Newport sensibility (Newport Seen saw very little Asian art this year.) But the show drew exhibitors from as far away as Asheville, North Carolina and Harrodsburg, Kentucky, who tailored their offerings to the Colonial, the representational, and the seafaring in paintings, furniture, and decorative arts (mahogany library steps, anyone?)

Co chairs for the Preview Party Norey Cullen and Brittain Bardes greeted guests at the door, and tout Newport was there, August being the month of non-stop social events in our town.

The Newport Antiques Show itself always spawns a round of Newport social events, including a dinner for the dealers, held at a private home, and post-preview party dinners. Maureen Donnell served dinner under a tent for 170 guests on Saturday night at her home.

All proceeds benefited The Boys & Girls Clubs of Newport County, represented by Beth Simone, who did duty at the check in desk, and the Newport Historical Society, represented by Director Ruth Taylor and her husband Adams TaylorElizabeth Sulock dressed in historical garb and a bonnet.  Seen were Captain Nicholas and Diane Brown, John and Jae French, Rick Bready, Mrs. Dorrance Hamilton, Oatsie Charles, Donald Ross, Richard Crisson, Rod O'Hanley, and David Ford.
