New Book Shows the Best of the Best of Newport

Author Bettie Pardee with photographer Alexander Nesbitt

Should we call Bettie Bearden Pardee, on the occasion the publication of her second book, "Living Newport", the Duchess, or the Doyenne, of Newport? Either will do, as this energetic, ladylike and charismatic blonde has been thoughtfully spreading the "brand" of Newport, RI, which we could call indelible, irreplaceable, and unique.

At a book talk in Newport kicking off of her publicity campaign for publisher Glitterati and as part of the Preservation Society of Newport County’s "Great Escapes" lecture series, author Bettie Bearden Pardee presented “Newport, a Fabled Destination".  Mrs. Pardee filled the house ( the historic Rosecliff mansion) and spoke of the spectacular and special essence of the City by the Sea, speaking about and showing events, homes, boats, people, and history.

Creating an appetite for the best of Newport, Mrs. Pardee was formerly a contributing editor to Bon Appetit magazine, where she produced “Entertaining with Style,” and served as the host and creative producer of the 13-part PBS series “The Presidential Palate: Entertaining at the White House.”

Living Newport now joins Mrs. Pardee's Private Newport as the second definitive "behind closed doors" look at the elegant lives and activities of Newporters. Town & Country recently celebrated the book, printing, "12 Photos Prove Newport is the Epitome of Old School American Elegance". And they did, and do.

The audience listened to descriptions of the gorgeous slides of brides and boats, of interiors and events, asked questions of the author, then repaired to Rosecliff's grand terrace, where they drank champagne and ate pink cupcakes and pastel cookies. Photographer Alexander (Sandy) Nesbitt, who took many of the photos in the book ( along with Mick Hales), was on hand to snap images of the effervescent event.
