Jessica Hagen Gallery Heralds Spring with James Coe Exhibit

The charming gallery on Bridge Street , Newport, welcomed artists, art lovers and friends back after a stormy winter to view  the best in American Contemporary Art.  The featured artist, James Coe,who has a passion for birds, nature, old barns, and relics of our rural heritage was there, commenting on his recent works and explaining techniques, and gallery owner Jessica Hagen was introducing him to guests

Growing up in the suburbs of New York City, he was fascinated early on by the egrets and shorebirds he noticed in nearby salt marshes, and he taught himself to identify the birds he spotted around town. He began to paint as a teenager when he and a friend set out to compile a field guide to the local birds.

Jim went on to Harvard, where he earned a degree in biology, with the goal of becoming an ornithologist, but he received little formal training in art until he attended Parson’s School of Design in New York.  After years of illustrating natural history books, he turned to fine art, which graces the wall of the Jessica Hagen Gallery. He spoke with guests, particularly artist/sculptor James Steele.

The cheer was infectious, the parking tight, and the guests, delighted to mingle and inform themselves about the new artist added to Jessica Hagen’s fascinating stable.  (Yes, the Hunt Slonem bunnies are still there.)

The gallery is open Thursday-Friday 10 a.m.10:00am  to 4:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and by appointment, and contains works of the stable of artists, as well as jewelry, some designed by Ms. Hagen herself. The gallery also features fascinating photography (photographer Elizabeth Kahane breezed in at the last moment) and sculpture.  For further information go to
