Immensely Entertaining Journey through Haute Couture with Former Editor of Paris Vogue

Judy Crosby of Island Books mans the sales table

Oh, those chic magazines!  Therein lies a tale, or, as the audience at the Redwood Library & Athenaeum heard, many tales.

Joan Juliet Buck has lived a life in fashion that could only be played by the young Audrey Hepburn, and she has written about it in books, the latest called “The Price of Illusion”, which was snapped up at her recent talk at The Redwood Library

Joan Juliet Buck gets ready to speak; with Caterine Milinaire

Ms. Buck, writer, actress, and novelist, whose resumé includes being Features Editor of British Vogue and Editor in chief of French Vogue magazines spoke to an audience of rapt listeners.  Brought to Newport by her long time friend, the fascinating  Caterine Milinaire Cushing. she detailed her life as actress and writer through a gossipy narrative, illustrated with slides. The names of those with which she associated are a pantheon of the fashion world and the creative community: Peter O’Toole and Jacques Tati of films, writer Tom Wolfe, artist Andy Warhol , Pamela Anderson. and Pamela Harriman. And the list of couturiers!  Yves Saint Laurent, Thom Ford Jil Sander, Thierry Mugler, Jean Paul Gaultier. And yet the most charming moments of her presentation were about her struggle to find desk space at Paris Vogue, and taking an apartment in the  Ste. Sulpice area of Paris that was quite truly haunted.

Comments on “le gauche caviar”  at the stylish magazine referred to bourgeois trinkets that were to be disdained, as nationalist pride dictated. Ms. Buck ended with a comment on her new teaching career at Kenyon College, a class on illusions and self presentation, and on the shoes work by Mme. Macron, wife of the new President of France.
