Fort Adams Salute to the Summer Solstice Historical and Breathtaking

Piping taps on the wall of Fort Adams as the flag is

lowered

The long history of Newport, Rhode Island, was easily felt at historic Fort Adams, abetted by uniformed members of the Newport Artillery Company, a bagpiper who played "Amazing Grace" at sunset, to a cannon salute, and lowering of the flag, enclosed by stoic stone walls that have witnessed so much history.

The recent 2nd Annual "Summer Solstice" event, a 'Friend and Fundraiser' to benefit the Fort Adams Trust, included behind-the-scenes tours, summer foods from Russell Morin Fine Catering, signature cocktails, live entertainment and dancing by Roger Ceresi and the "All Starz",  two raffles, and a silent auction.

The partially restored Fort was monumental in the sunset glow, and the party, held  under a large tent, was enjoyed by Director Richard Nagle , Eric Hertfelder, and past President Lee Whitaker. Politicians who attended included State Representative John J. Loughlin, II, State Senator Teresa Paiva Weed, and State Representative Peter Martin.

This year's silent auction includes a variety of offerings from tickets to George Wein's Newport Folk Festival and CareFusion Newport Jazz Festival to an overnight stay at Vanderbilt Hall with signature massage treatment and roof-top cocktails! There are many more prizes to bid on and a raffle that includes Spiced Pear Chef's Tasting Dinner paired with wine for four and a Hotel Viking Get-A-Way for two with breakfast and a spa treatment in SpaTerre.

Patriotic new signage system for the gounds in red, white and blue was installed just in time for the event,  and for Independence Day.  The markers were designed by Tom Roskelly, Newport Seen's creative partner.

Fort Adams has figured in every epoch of Newport’s history, as guardian of its remarkable  harbor. Funds raised from the"Summer Solstice" evening will go toward the ongoing restoration of this proud and imposing fortress.
