Newport Flower Show Goes Spare, Modern & Mobile

“There are always flowers for those who want to see them” — Henri Matisse

Encompassing the new trend in accommodations, buildings, and lifestyle, “Cottages Smart & Small” was the theme of the 23rd Annual Flower Show of the Preservation Society of Newport, and it drew fascinated crowds to both its exhibitions and special events.

The Traveling Theater was.......Little!

On the lawn of the magnificent mansion Rosecliff were small “cottages” whose interiors were masterworks of design (and all, or most, on wheels.)  The contrast with the mansion was quite notable, and one of the imported cottages gave new meaning to the term “Little Theater”.

Particularly notable among the cottages was theShe-shed, the response to the Man Cave, and infinitely more elegant.

The cozy, elegant "She Shed"

There were  beautiful displays on the front lawn by floral companies, the presence of author Martha Stewart as guest celebrity, signing her new book”Martha’s Flowers:  A Practical Guide to Growing, Gathering Enjoying”, and  an array of upscale booths on the spacious

back lawn. Friends met and greeted, hats were lovely, and the displays inside the mansion showed the original and prize winning arrangements. Guests for a private dinner, which was held in a tent on the front lawn, sauntered from the back lawn to the front, through the mansion which also held a fascinating jewelry display.

On the back lawn all was gaiety, as a jazz trio played, ladies and gentlemen sporting hats and summer party garb, wandered the elegant booths.  Of course, the living topiary plants were there, moving as elegant trees.

Other events planned were a previous Friday night private dinner, a Satuday luncheon with Ms. Stewart, and a Champagne and Jazz Brunch on Sunday.

This Flower Show posed the question of what is in vogue now, and answered it, interestingly.  Fortunately, the imaginative flower arrangements and designs and their gifted creators do not change.

Kudos to Pat Fernandez, Chairman, Trudy Coxe, CEO & Executive Director of  The Preservation Society, the sponsors and the hard-working associates and crew. And all the glamorous guests.
