The "Spring Fling" of Daffodillion Days was held in a colossal rain storm at the Chanler, but it dampened neither spirits, costumes, or chapeaux.  Though clouds and rain were abundant, high spirits (and daffodils) were blooming and MORE abundant, as  John Hirschboeck, Director of the Festival,  wore flowers in his crown, and Miss Rhode Island and Miss Rhode Island Outstanding Teen beamed and charmed guests, many adorned with daffodils and the pin that admitted them to the week’s events.

With a cry of “900,000 and on our way to a Dillion” (think: Million), the party simply kicked off nearly a week of activities with heavenly harp music by Arilyn Mitchell, as guests admired each others’ creations.  Hat of
the Evening was undoubtedly that of designer Mikki Micarelli, whose bonnet boasted 58 of the sunny blooms.

State Representative Lauren Carson spoke of the nobility of the effort to make Newport the Daffodil capital of the country, and Tree Warden Scott Wheeler thanked Mr. Hirschboeck and the financial support of Ronald Lee Fleming, making the events (which grow) every year for the past 20 years. He also applauded Mr. Hirschboek’s energy and "wackiness."

There was a toast to the effort, and a raffle for three budding arrangements  before the evening wound down.
