Kate Gubelman and Diana Bunting with a canvas

David Barnes. well known Rhode Island artist, and his creative friends exhibited their latest works in the lovely mansion, Merrillton, (quite near Kingscote) in Newport, RI recently.

Co-chairs for the event were Diana Bunting and Kate Gubelman, themselves artists and students of Mr. Barnes. The artwork was staged and displayed thoughout the magnificent Italianate villa, designed and built by Samuel Powel in the early 1850's as a summer home. Even the stairwells served as a backdrop for art, with a series of nudes ascending (a paraphrase of Marcel Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase" perhaps?). Some of the art on the second floor was screamingly modern, and framed by the period architectural detail, created an interesting energy.

Jimmy Coleman arrived in his Porsche, which made a tableau of the drive on the two plus acres of estate grounds just off Newport's renowned Bellevue Avenue. The mansion itself is an artistic architectural treasure.

Guests were served refreshments on the veranda, and Mr. Barnes discussed his works with guests. Victoria Leiter Miele perused the artwork, making a purchase. Bunnie Quinn of Lila Delman answered question about Merrillton, which is on the market. Ms. Quinn said the house got its name in l933 when it was purchased by the Merrills of New York. The third owner was Jane Pickens of Bellevue House, who bought it for her daughter . The villa remained in the family until Ms. Pickens' only child died in 2010.

Orders for paintings, sketches and sculptures were taken, and a portion of all proceeds went to the programs of the Women's Resource Center of Newport & Bristol Counties.

All in a late summer afternoon in Newport, Rhode Island.
