Delightful Fundraiser for a Cause Held by Claggett Memorial Friends

Dan Dwyer greeting guests

“Help Us Go Sailing,” an event at Newport’s Castle Hill Inn, brought together friends of the C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta benefiting North America’s premier event for sailors with disabilities. Chaired and conducted by the Honorable Judy Clagett McClennan, the evening event featured the loveliest, most appealing, and well—presented silent auction that Newport Seen has ever encountered, with primary colors, platforms, and individual framing gracing the table's offerings.

The guests, included sponsor and co-chair Dan Dwyer, who greeted people at the sign in table. All arrived feeling buoyant and convivial, as they greeted each other and scrutinized the silent auction items.

Emlen Drayton, assisted by his wife Liz, conducted the live auction of an apartment in Paris, sailing trips, and other delights as Stephanie Clagett McLennan served as helpful assistant. Lila Delman Real Estate, an event sponsor, sent its "Ladies of Lila" Robin Nicholson, Cynthia and Kim Doherty, while Co-chair Annie Becker was found volunteering at the sign in.

The serious mission of The Clagett is to provide sailors with disabilities the tools to improve their skills and the opportunity to test them in competition. Several of the "Competitors" were there, and Lee ? spoke of the immense benefit to their lives, while partaking of a delicious buffet and hors d'oeuvres. A screen showed images of the live racing.

Seen listening to the music were Robert and Ann Conner, Jessica Moreland, Brad Read of Sail Newport, Jan Gordon, Liz Drayton, Gladys Szapary, and Kim Herrlinger.

The Clagett Memorial Races has evolved over its history from an event for sailors in only one type of boat, to conducting its signature clinic and three-days of racing in the three classes of boats sailed in the Paralympic Games. The Clagett assists each attendee in achieving his personal competitive goals, which also has a positive impact on their overall quality of life. Proceeds from this benefit will allow event organizers to increase the number of scholarships that defray expenses for competitors to attend, as well as employ more coaches to increase the amount of individual attention each competitor receives.
