Darrell West Expounds on Trump Presidency at Newport Art Museum

The audience awaiting Darrell.West

As the country begins the second year of the Trump presidency, the first year, comprising many varied events, decisions and controversies, was evaluated by Darrell West, Vice President and Director of Governance Studies at the Brookings Institute, in a lecture at the Newport Art Museum, “Assessing the Trump Presidency”.

Welcomed by NAM Director Norah Diedrich, the audience listened attentively to  Dick Hunt, Chair of the Winter Lecture Series, as he gave background information on the distinguished speaker

Dr. West commented jovially that one year under the Trump administration has felt like seven years. “It’s really like dog years,” he quipped.

He discussed the President’s job performance, leadership of the country and future electoral prospects. Such questions as: How are prominent Democrats handling the Trump administration? In this polarized political climate, is cooperation between the parties possible? were discussed.

Looking ahead, West predicted who to watch as the 2018 midterm election season unfolds, taking on the question of whether the Democrats can regain control of the House of Representatives. The important states he named were Indiana, North Dakota, West Virginia and Missouri, which would provide a narrow Democratic margin.

The question and answer period was lively. When asked by a guest about the coming year, he responded “My prediction for 2018 is you probably haven’t seen anything yet,” West said. This year will be an “equally crazy and chaotic year, if not even crazier.” He suggested that that there could be a government shutdown – and look what happened!

After the lecture, there was a reception, at which Dr. West answered ever more questions, and listened to guests’comments and concerns.
