Chic, Discreet and Enduring: The Chesterfield, Palm Beach

TRAVEL & UNDERSAIL

The fabled "Leopard Lounge", a dark den of music and dancing of an evening, is itself a destination for Palm Beachers and NewPalmers. With its weekend live music, dancing, dark paneled and mirrored room, it is the perfect retreat for dining and dancing.

But there's the charming, discreet, elegant hotel, as well. Built in 1926, The Chesterfield is a registered historic site located two blocks from Worth Avenue's wonderful shopping, and only six miles from Palm Beach International Airport. This location is also a leisurely and attractive stroll to nearby Atlantic beaches, and is near many restaurants.

The hotel's amenities include the Leopard Room supper club, a heated pool and hot tub, fireside library, and Churchill's Cigar Room. Subdued, much like a private club, it also offers afternoon tea and 24-hour room service. The pool is beautifully  landscaped -- so Palm Beach --, the hot tub was in constant use, and the entire outdoor area was a palmy oasis.

All  the  guest rooms have been recently redone, and they are comfortable as well as beautiful, featuring traditional English decor, fine fabrics, antiques, bathrobes, hairdryers, cable TV, irons and ironing boards, nightly turndown service, and -- jelly beans.

The dark paneled studies on the main floor – Newport Seen especially liked the one called the Cigar room -- suggest nothing so much as an English country house. In a nod to the 21st century, a computer station is available across from the fireplace, as a portrait of Winston Churchill watches over guests. No cigars were smoked during our stay.

Small spaces used luxuriously

Breakfast is included, and is a delightful array of choices, from Eggs Benedict to granola, drawing back faithful and perennial guests such as Newporters Ellen Barnes, and Mikki Micarelli, who recently hosted a delightful birthday brunch for her aunt ??and other relatives in the Leopard Room, which Newport Seen attended.  NewPalmers Jay Serzan and Lisa Downey came to dance and frolic on a Sunday night.   There is an outdoor dining space, as well, covered with lush green palms, and the service is delightful.

Hyatt Place, a City Hotel for Business Travelers in West Palm

At a stopover in West Palm Beach for the American International Fine Arts Fair, Newport Seen visited The Hyatt Place Hotel, which is strategically located near the Convention Center, trendy City Place, the Armory Arts Center, wonderful antiques shops along South Dixie Highway, corporate and business offices, and the courts.

Austere and functional, it offers valet parking in an indoor garage, a buffet breakfast, an afternoon snack bar, a full gym, an attractive indoor swimming pool, and a lively evening bar. The building has been renovated and the rooms are fitted out for the business traveler, with mini kitchens and desks in each. The small staff does its very best for guests, there are no outdoor spaces at this urban establishment, and the long narrow halls and elevators are often full of the maid staff and carts.

A work desk in the guest room, with wi-fi

The main attraction of this hostelry is its reasonable price point, which is attractive by Palm Beach standards, and its indisputable convenience.
