Ballard Park Goes "Into the Woods" for Annual Fundraiser

Very sporty cars

In the bucolic setting at the home of Carol and Les Ballard, Beacon Hill Road, Newport, The Friends of Ballard Park held its annual fundraiser, always a theatrical event. The living trees, who for years journeyed to a setting on Berkeley Avenue in Newport were spared the trip: the party came to them.

Listening to jazz by the Ben Shaw Quartet, tasting excellent vintage wines from Les Ballard's fabled wine Cellar (and champagnes, too), guests at the event were served superior cocktails and hors d'oeuvres as they perused an extensive silent auction.

Ballard Park, an unspoiled 13 acre preserve, remarkably diverse in geography, forms an unfragmented block of habitat and open space with the contiguous 54 acre wildlife refuge, Gooseberry Beach, Newport Country Club and Brenton Point State Park. It is the scene of numerous outdoor. imaginative events for families and children. The park was a gift to the city of Newport by Carol Ballard in 1990.

Seen were staunch and perennial supporters of the Park Mayor Harry Winthrop, who talked with Mr. Ballard and Justin McLaughlin. State Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed arrived, and Mr. Ballard, ever the host, spoke with David Elwell. Executive Director of the Park Colleen McGrath spoke to guests and assured that all went smoothly. Party Co-chairs Colleen Quinn and Peggy Richmond greeted the the guests, who included Jonathan Pardee, Diane and Robert Beaver, Michelle and Tom Shevlin, Alilison and Steve Walk, and David Thalmann.

All proceeds from the event go to programming at Ballard Park. For information on upcoming events, go to www.ballardpark.org.
