Bags with Pedigrees and Provenance at RISD event

Celebrating the timeless art of designer handbags, RISD Associates assembled a rare collection, and held an overflow cocktail party to highlight them as works of portable art.  What did they call it?  "It's in the Bag", of course.

Vivid as flags, handbags have become part of the unending visual parade of life. Up and down fashionable thoroughfares, a veritable flotilla of bags bob gaily on the arms of women and men the world over. And everyone carries some kind of tote to hold books, computers, lunch or sports gear.

Coveted bags from Chanel, Ferragamo, Jimmy Choo, Carlos  Falachi, Tory Burch and Valentino wwere among the haute couture designer bags highlighted. Prominent Rhode Island artist Shawn Kenney contributed his version of the phenomenon as demonstrated by his painting of the most iconic handbag of all time.

The evening’s gala featured a live and silent auction of designer and specialty bags. Many “bags” were packed with one-of-a-kind experiences with an emphasis on style. Ferragamo offered a private tour of their Museum in Florence, Italy along with a two-night stay at the family’s Il Borro Vineyard and Inn. Luxury accommodations at a New York City apartment with a private tour of the Museum of Modern Art, a stay at a private ski lodge in New Hampshire, and a weekend on “Old Cape Cod” were also offered. Theatre and ballet tickets, sailing and golf prizes, a Nantucket wine basket and a limited edition cuff bracelet from Tiffany & Co. are other standout items. Tony Petrarca, chief meteorologist from WPRI-TV, delighted as the evening’s auctioneer. Festive food and drink were served, and it was all a snap, click or zip.

The Live and Silent Auctions featured a “Fulfill Your Fantasies Raffle”. Hmmmmmm. Did we really want to know? All proceeds from the cocktail evening and the sale benefited the Museum of Art Rhode Island School of Design education programs.
